PLANNED PARENTHOOD’S DARK PAST

1916-1936

THE DOORS OPEN

The nation’s largest abortion provider was founded by Margaret Sanger and her partners. Sanger was a socialist who supported eugenics and even spoke about her ideas at a Ku Klux Klan meeting. In fact, there was a KKK member on the very first Planned Parenthood Board of Directors (then called the American Birth Control League) whose eugenics and writings inspired Nazi officials. The creation of Planned Parenthood spawned the “revolutionary” idea that killing babies in the womb was socially and morally acceptable. When Planned Parenthood opened its doors, the belief that every child deserves a chance was thrown out the window.

1936-1956

THE START OF A MOVEMENT

Margaret Sanger and her partners established The Birth Control Federation of America after merging the American Birth Control League and the Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau. With their new organization, they established the “Negro Project” to “help” the African-American community. However, it has been argued that the project was perceptively racist and designed to control the African American population level in accordance to their eugenic philosophies. The Birth Control Federation of America later changed its name to become the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The International Planned Parenthood Federation was established when Sanger and her partners saw unlimited opportunity to expand her birth control crusade. Margaret Sanger was the president for seven years.

1956-1976

A NEW ERA FOR WOMEN

Fresh off establishing their global mission, Planned Parenthood spent the next several years taking their battles to court and supporting future abortion providers such as the Jane Collective in Chicago. Planned Parenthood’s most critical win with Roe v Wade set legal standards for fetal viability and established new privacy rights for women. “Jane Roe” later regretted becoming a symbol for Planned Parenthood and became an ardent pro-life activist.

1976-1996

VICTORIES AND VIOLENCE

Planned Parenthood implemented a nationwide campaign, emphasizing their positions were “pro-child” and “pro-family” even though they were engaged in ending the lives of children and consequently ending potential families. The International Planned Parenthood Federation welcomed the China Family Planning Association into its ranks as its main access to China. This same organization was responsible for China’s forced sterilization, abortion programs, and one-child policy. To this day, the organization is still a full member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund was later established to raise large sums of pro-abortion money to influence public policy and initiate grassroots organizing. This group has since raised and spent tens of millions of dollars on political advertising, organizing and lobbying efforts.

1996-2016

THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Planned Parenthood would soon launch a campaign to have the abortion pill available to every person who would ask for it as an over the counter medication and without copays. Planned Parenthood lobbyists would later support amendments in the Affordable Care Act that forced companies who opposed abortions to cover them in their health insurance plans. Planned Parenthood Federation of America also launched their own international network called Planned Parenthood Global to focus on “innovative and sustainable” abortion efforts around the world.

TODAY

100 YEARS STRONG

Today Planned Parenthood has a record it can be proud of. The organization is currently under federal investigation for selling baby parts, it continues to target minority communities, and even opposes medical care for newborn babies who survive an abortion. They are now fighting harder than ever to support state policies that would allow abortions through the full pregnancy.
